This is a brief bio of Taylor Lautner, before we move on to discussing his workout regimen.
Lautner was born in 1992, on February 12th. At the time of the filming of Twilight : New Moon, Lautner was 17 years old. Until he was thirteen years old, Lautner focused much of his time on martial arts. At the age of 12 he won the Junior World Championships as a black belt in karate. He started acting in 2001 and in 2008, he played a Native American named Jacob Black in the movie Twilight.
Lautner was not the director’s initial choice for the role of New Moon’s Jacob Black.
The Director of New Moon, Catherine Hardwicke, considered casting someone else to replace Taylor Lautner. She wanted someone with more muscle and more believable to play Jacob Black. Because the character of Jacob Black transforms into a wolf, the director was looking for an actor who had more of an imposing appearance than Lautner.
Taylor Had to Gain Muscle Quickly or Possibly Lose His Role in New Moon
Fortunately, Taylor’s background in martial arts was helpful when he needed to improve his physical conditioning. If we were talking about a normal 17 year old boy that didn’t haven’t Taylor’s martial arts background, there isn’t any way he could have put on the amount of muscle he did in that small amount of time.
This is the trick behind Jacob Black’s toned, tight abs.
Taylor didn’t just get his ripped abs because he trained for the 9 months prior to when they started shoot New Moon. Because of his years of training in martial arts, his muscles were more dense and mature than most would have at his age. People who compete in martial arts derive power from tightening their core. This tightening over time builds hard and defined muscles in the abs. The way to reveal the abs is dieitng down to a low body fat percentage, but the reason Taylor Lautner had an excpetional six pack was due to his martial arts experience.
Adding on all that muscle was easy for Taylor.
Because of his youth, Lautner could quickly gain twenty pounds. One aspect of working out that the fitness magazines don’t make you aware of is that gaining mass is easy when you begin your regimen. The amount of muscle Taylor put on his body was the natural amount of muscle he was suppose to have. Taylor is not huge at all, and this is a good thing. Just like most younger males, Lautner could move towards his body’s maximum efficiency very quickly. Because his life consists of little more than acting, he could dedicate every moment of nine months towards this. Usually, this process will take a year or two.
What he says in his interviews about how he put on the muscle for New Moon.
If you have watched any of Taylor’s interviews, you might have noticed he doesn’t say much about his workouts. He makes broad statements like, “I ate a lot of food and worked out”. Honestly, this is all it takes for a young guy in his late teens to early 20′s to gain those 15-25 pounds. The trick is to then get lean and ripped. Luckily for Taylor Lautner he still has the high metabolism of a young person on his side. As he grows a bit older he will have to change his strategy.
